Humans and Magic
Magic is a thing that all humans in Avalon have the potential to develop. The original spell cast by the first generation of Avalonian wizards was set to attract those with that potential to Faerie, in order to keep them safe. The potential to use magic can come from many sources. Some get their talent by blood relations, some through faith, others through years of careful study. How people first obtained their magical talents is irrelevant, as is how each individual focuses their particular gift. Some use chanting and words of power, others use wild gestures and arm waving, and yet others really just need a pinch of bat guano.
While all humans possess the potential for magic, that potential varies in strength. Some have the talent and skill to become great mages, while others struggle to light a candle. Just with any talent, greater mastery generally comes with practice, and it is possible for someone with little natural ability to work hard and surpass someone with more talent, but less of a work ethic.

There are eight schools of magic: abjuration, conjuration, divination, enchantment, evocation, illusion, necromancy and transmutation. Seven of the schools are taught at the academy. The eighth, necromancy, is not taught and is generally taboo. It should be noted that the skills and abilities listed at each skill level below are guidelines in order to give an idea of what would be appropriate, and shouldn't be interpreted as strictly literal. Feel free to interpret these guidelines as best befits your character.
For each school, skill is ranked from 1-10, with titles given for each rank:
1-Neophyte
2-Acolyte
3-Disciple
4-Adept
5-Scholar
6-Visionary
7-Luminary
8-Spellbinder
9-Master
10-(Archmaster)
